[One of the Three Great Yokai] Tengu [Yokai Encyclopedia]

Tengu came from China as well as "Oni" and "Kappa".
Tengu was a shooting star called "Tenkousei" in China.
It is said that bad things happen when this shooting star flows, and since I came to Japan, it has come to be called the shooting star "Amatsukitsune".

"狗（Dog）" = "犬（Dog）"?

"狗（Ku）" is a Chinese character that stands for a small dog.
Born as a shooting star, the tengu became a dog.
According to the Chinese geography book "Sengaikyo", the tengu's cry is explained as "Miu Miu" or "Ryuryu".

Four types of tengu

Tengu have been divided into four types since they came to Japan.

Hanataka Tengu

"Hanataka" means that the nose is high.
And the most famous tengu.
As the name suggests, it has a tall nose, a red face, wings, and a wind-breathing fan.
There are various personalities, but I get the impression that most of them have a comical personality.

Karasu Tengu

"Karasu" means raven.
It is said to be a "raven", but the motif is a "black kite".
Its characteristics are that it has a beak and wings, and often has weapons such as swords and spears.
They are often worshiped as gods and sometimes ride on foxes.
I have the impression that he has a strict personality, probably because he may be a god, but sometimes he is treated like a mascot character.

As it is. It is drawn in the form of a black kite.
The number is very small, but it is the only non-human-shaped tengu.

Handsome tengu

It is a tengu that has recently appeared.
It is a character that appears in manga and anime.
The appearance is characterized by the fact that most handsome men have some wings and almost no characteristics as a tengu.

[Dr. Yokai] Inoue Enryo's Scientific Theory of Yokai [Yokai Encyclopedia]

  What is Inoue Enryo? Enryo Inoue was a Buddhist philosopher and educator. He was a teacher who focused on philosophy to gain diverse perspectives and built a school called Tetugakukan (means Philosophy Hall), which is now Toyo University . He studied youkai (ghosts) in an attempt to break through the monstrosities and youkai and gave lectures on them , and was also known as "Dr. Haunted" or "Dr. Youkai" . He also developed a board game called "Tetugakutobisyougo" (meaning "Philosophy Flying Shogi") , a compromise of the rules of both Go and Shogi because it takes a long time to settle the game.  Inoue Enryo (March 18, 1858 - June 6, 1919) strangely classified Inoue Enryo divided youkai into two main categories.
