[Remains in Japan] Youkai Relics~Kappa~ [Yokai Encyclopedia]

Anime that is popular in Japan now

Nowadays, the anime "Jujutsu Kaisen" is popular in Japan.
This anime is a story about an ordinary high school boy eating a youkai relic and gaining powerful power.
The youkai relic is a youkai's finger called "Ryomen Sukuna".
Ryomensukuna is a youkai with faces on both the front and back of the head, and has a total of eight limbs.
This Ryomensukuna is a youkai that actually appears not only in anime but also in Japanese folk tales.
Of course, eating the youkai's relics doesn't give you any power.
However, youkai relics remain in various parts of Japan.
This time, as part of that, we will introduce the relics of Kappa.

Kappa

Zuiryuji Temple

Zuiryuji is a temple in Osaka.
There is a kappa mummy here.
It is said that the kappa has a plate on the head and a shell on the back, but this mummy does not.
There are 5 fingers and toes each.
Hair is reddish brown.
The mouth has a face reminiscent of fish.

Manzoji Temple

Manzoji is a temple in Ibaraki prefecture.
There is a kappa hand mummy there.
It is the hand of a kappa who lived in the Sakura River, a tributary of Kasumigaura.
The back of this hand is densely packed with fine hair and has a web.
According to folklore, a mischievous kappa in Sakuragawa was captured by a villager and his right wrist was cut off as a punishment. The kappa was about to be killed, but the chief priest of Manzoji saved his life.
After that, the kappa promised not to do anything wrong and returned to the river.
Until recently, it was said that it would start to rain if I pulled out this hand, so I was afraid of heavy rain, so I kept it in a safe place without taking it out.

Zenkokuji Temple

Zenkokuji is a temple located in Kita City, Iwate Prefecture.
The kappa who lived in the Kitakami River were doing bad things. The chief priest of Zenkokuji found it and caught it.
And the kappa promised the priest that he would never do anything wrong and wrote it in a letter.
That is this "Kappa no Wabijo".

At that time, as evidence written by the kappa, the ribs were inked and pressed on paper.
That is this "Kappa no Rokkotsu Shomon".

Maki family's medicine

The ancestors of the Maki family were taught how to make medicine by saving the lives of kappa living in Ushiku Swamp.
"Iseman no Ukou" made based on it is said to be effective in treating cuts and swelling, and was sold nationwide until the 1970s.
Currently manufactured, but not for sale, it is provided free of charge to those who need it.

"Makishikazo Hokamirukoto Kinzu" describes how to make the kappa's medicine.
Here's how to make it.
① Pour sesame oil into a copper pot of about 3607.81 ml and simmer slowly over charcoal.
② When the oil starts to boil, add the pre-stirred medicated red lead, myrrh, frankincense, etc. and mix well.
③ When the color becomes jet black and the stickiness improves, it is complete.
As a caveat, it must be adjusted according to the season and the temperature and humidity of the day.

summary

・ There is a case where a bad kappa was caught
・ Kappa mummies are found all over Japan
・ Letters etc. are left in addition to the mummy
・ There is a medicine that Kappa taught me how to make
